This is further compounded by changing patterns of substance misuse\, as well as an increasing incidence of polysubstance use. The rise in fentanyl use or exposure\, concurrent substance misuse\, as well as overdose deaths\, necessitates consideration of educational elements that promote understanding of SUDs\, as well as their identification\, treatment\, and management.  Section 1263 of the ‘Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023’ otherwise known as the Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act\, requires new or renewing Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registrants\, as of June 27\, 2023\, to have completed a total of at least 8 hours of training on opioid or other substance use disorders\, as well as the safe pharmacological management of dental pain.  This training will meet this new requirement and provide prescribers the opportunity to understand the risks and role of medications to effectively treat pain\, screening for substance use and related risk factors for substance use\, and stigma as barriers to engaging patients into treatment. \n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Dr. Loyd currently holds positions as the Chief Medical Officer for Cedar Recovery\, the Chair of the Tennessee Opioid Abatement Council appointed by current Tennessee Governor Bill Lee. NFP provides drug awareness by sponsoring the annual National Red Ribbon Campaign™.  Since its beginning in 1985\, the Red Ribbon has touched the lives of millions of people around the world. In response to the murder of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena\, angered parents and youth in communities across the country began wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the killing and destruction cause by drugs in America. In 1988\, NFP sponsored the first National Red Ribbon Celebration. Today\, the Red Ribbon serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

ON SUNDAY\, NOVEMBER 12TH.  NO REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ALLOWED ON-SITE. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nObjectives:  After attending this course\, participants will be able to: \n\nDescribe the impact of stigma\, trauma\, and the social determinants of health on substance use and recovery.\nExplore strategies to incorporate evidence-based screening tools for substance use disorder (SUD) risk.\nExplain person-centric language and evidence-based communication strategies\nDiscuss lived experience in active use and in the recovery community.\nExamine the stigma of medication for addiction treatment (MAT) in the recovery community.\nDemonstrate how to apply the “clinically-useful” definition of addiction to the patient with a SUD who may present in the primary care setting.\nDiscuss effective treatment of patients with opioid and other substance use disorders\, in light of the National Institute of Drug Abuse’s (NIDA) evidence-based Principles of Drug Addiction Treatment.\nExamine evidence-based behavioral and pharmacological approaches to managing patients with a SUD.\n\n\n\n\n\nDescription: Alabama continues to see a surge in substance use disorder (SUD) and SUD-related health problems as well as an increasing need for screening and access to medication for addiction treatment (MAT). Screening\, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is a public health framework approach used to identify and deliver services to those at risk for substance-use disorders\, depression\, and other mental health conditions. Primary care is the first entry to the healthcare system for many patients\, and SBIRT offers the potential to identify these patients early and assist in their treatment. MAT supports recovery from SUD through the use of medications such as buprenorphine\, naltrexone\, and methadone for opioid use disorder and naltrexone\, acamprosate\, and disulfiram for alcohol use disorder\, in conjunction with behavioral health interventions.\n\n\n\n\nWho Should Attend: This course is designed for physicians\, certified registered nurse practitioners\, certified nurse midwives\, physician assistants\, nurses\, counselors\, and social workers who are interested in supporting the total health and well-being of their patients.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nContinuing Education\nABEC – The Alabama Department of Mental Health and VitAL have been approved by the Alabama Board of Examiners in Counseling to offer 4 counseling contact hours for this training. \n\n\n\n\nASBSWE – The University of Alabama\, School of Social Work is an approved provider of continuing education by the Alabama Board of Social Work Examiners.  This training offers 4.oo contact hours for social workers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
