The World Health Organization has classified stigma as having a detrimental effect on the treatment of individuals and is a huge barrier to recovery. Public attitudes about various stigmatizing conditions indicate that individuals with a substance use disorder are viewed more negatively than individuals with a mental health disorder. This stigma promotes the vicious cycle that is embedded in the disease of substance use disorder. Screening\, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is a public health framework approach used to identify and deliver services to those at risk for substance-use disorders\, depression\, and other mental health conditions. Primary care is the first entry to the healthcare system for many patients\, and SBIRT offers the potential to identify these patients early and assist in their treatment. This is further compounded by changing patterns of substance misuse\, as well as an increasing incidence of polysubstance use. The rise in fentanyl use or exposure\, concurrent substance misuse\, as well as overdose deaths\, necessitates consideration of educational elements that promote understanding of SUDs\, as well as their identification\, treatment\, and management.  Section 1263 of the ‘Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023’ otherwise known as the Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act\, requires new or renewing Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registrants\, as of June 27\, 2023\, to have completed a total of at least 8 hours of training on opioid or other substance use disorders\, as well as the safe pharmacological management of dental pain.  This training will meet this new requirement and provide prescribers the opportunity to understand the risks and role of medications to effectively treat pain\, screening for substance use and related risk factors for substance use\, and stigma as barriers to engaging patients into treatment. \n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

It is made possible by a grant provided by SAMHSA. \nIn January 2022\, the Auburn University Center for Opioid Research\, Education\, and Outreach’s Substance Use and Misuse Institute faculty members\, Drs. Haley Phillippe\, Brent Fox\, and Karen Marlowe received $750\,000 in sponsored project funds. The Alabama Department of Mental Health provided funds through a sub-award through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The educational programming developed targets two primary cohorts\, community leaders and healthcare professionals. Healthcare professionals will be eligible to receive continuing education credits for their participation. The content presented focuses on the emerging trends of substance use disorders in Alabama; specifically\, the prevalence of substance use disorders amongst populations of significance. The project’s webinars will remain accessible through September of 2024.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
